Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking Senior Rail Engineer to lead our growing list of rail projects and pursuits. Qualified candidates must have experience that includes planning, design, and preparation of construction drawings and contract documents for all types of rail projects from planning through construction. They will have served as a project engineer, task lead, project manager on rail projects with key public and private clients, including state DOT's, class 1, 2, and 3 railroads, passenger and commuter rail agencies, seaports, logistic parks, private and public economic development entities, etc. Rail projects include commuter, intercity, freight, intermodal, light and heavy rail, as well as passenger stations, maintenance support facilities, rail yards, inland ports, mainline or line-of-road work, at-grade crossings, and grade separations. We are looking for an individual with strong written and verbal communication skills, a proven ability to lead projects and teams. This individual must be energetic, self-directed, and success focused.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of technical and commercial approaches for key strategic pursuits and work closely with the marketing team to develop winning proposals
  • Build on long term client relationships and build new client connections, especially within the goods movement industries
  • Develop project scopes, fees, and schedules for rail design contracts from planning to final PS&E and design support during construction
  • Monitor project scope, fee, and progress for the successful completion of projects
  • Manage project risks with a solution-based mindset to add value to M&N's clients
  • Recruit and develop junior and mid-level employees to serve client needs
  • Active participation / representation of Moffatt & Nichol in the rail and goods movement industries
  • Develop final PS&E documents per client and applicable standards to obtain approvals
  • Perform, lead, and evaluate designs for rail, transit and/or general civil projects including, but not limited to, track, grade crossing, quiet zone, safety improvements, railroad grading and drainage, 3D modeling of rail corridors, wet/dry utilities, and permit processing
  • Perform, lead, and evaluate rail design for freight, commuter, or intermodal projects
  • Coordinates effectively with various disciplines such as environmental, geotechnical, structures, site/civil, permitting, surveyors, right of way, traffic, roadway, etc
  • Leads workshops and large teams during internal and external review sessions
  • Coordinates with subcontractors during project execution
  • Assists with the identification of required engineering resource requirements, internal & external
  • Oversight of engineering deliverables and requirements
  • Manages input from external engineering partners assigned during the entire project delivery phase and oversees the management of external engineering consultants during the implementation phase
  • Performs various tasks in MicroStation, Inrail, OpenRail, AutoCAD, and Civil3D

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil engineering; required
  • 7-10 of experience in rail engineering industry; required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure; required
  • Experience leading plan preparation for large and small rail projects; required
  • Experience in Rail and other transportation infrastructure; required
  • Experience in terminal design, rail safety, rail crossings, signal timing; desired
  • Software experience required in:
    • Microstation
    • Inrail
    • OpenRail
    • AutoCAD
    • Civil3D
    • Microsoft projects; preferred
    • P6 Scheduling; preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation)
  • Availability and willingness to travel

Working conditions:

Works indoors and onsite/outdoors with some travel across the United States. Frequently sits, stands and walks as well as writes and uses a computer keyboard. May be exposed to weather conditions including rain, and very hot and very cold.

Physical requirements:

Sedentary for long periods of time, interact with clients, and travel occasionally.
